MAHAPURUSH MADHABDEVA
PART 1
Mahapurush Madhabdeva was a great personality connected with the New
Vaishnavite movement of Assam (1489-1596 A.D.). He was the most responsible
disciple of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva who was the greatest Vaishnava saint
and religious reformer of Assam in 15th century and he preached 'EKA-SARANA HARI
NAM DHARMA the religion of super surrender to one who is Lord Bishnu. Dr. Banikanta
Kakoti says, "EKA-SARANA HARI NAM DHARMA is one not a religion of bargain and
barter between God and men or of sacrifice . It is one with exclusive emphasis one
slow spiritual regeneration, one growth of a new spiritual outlook by laying flesh and
spirit in the hands of the Lord." Mahapurush Madhabdeva was an honest follower of
Srimanta Sankardeva and EKA-SARANA HARI NAM DHARMA. He did his best to
spread the message of Bhakti far and wide in the region.
Gobindagiri was the father and Manoroma was the mother of Mahapurush Madhabdeva who lived at Banduka on the Dhaleswari or Dharla river. Now it is in Bangladesh. The first wife of Gobindagiri was Ankita who died at a young age leaving behind a son, Damodara or Flupchandra. After marriage of Damodara Gobindigiri left Banduka. He came to Bardowa where he met the Bara Bhuyans and second marriage was performed with Manorama or Manohari. Madhabdeva was born in 1489 AD. at Narayanpur (now in Lakhlmpur district) at the residence of Harisinga Bora Ujir.
From his childhood he was an intelligent, sharp-wilted, fearless, good-hearted and good natured. He was loved by everybody around him. He had some super natural powers. Madhabdeva's life was not easy but very hard and full of struggle. H had to face so many troubles and problems due to poverty.
In such a state of helplessness Gobindagiri went door to door of his relatives with the hope of getting some relief but he was disappointed. Madhabdeva had a sister, Urvasi married to Ramdas (Gayapani), an honest and noble Kayasthya youth of Hokorakuchi.
