MAHAPURUSHA SANKARDEVA : THE PIONEER OF NAMA-DHARMA IN ASSAM
Part 1
The term "Nama-Dharma“ means the kind of practicing "Dharma‘ simply by chanting the name of Hari or Almighty God. It is considered as the easiest path to attain spiritual fulfillment. Most of the best-known 'dharmas' in the world are based on this type of practice. The greatness of Nama-Dharma was concurred even in the Vedas. Ancient holy-cooks state that the effect of this 'dharma' was so great. Even the Gods grew envious of men for their achievement of spiritual path without any trouble
With a view to degrade this achievement, Gods once concealed the Nama-Dharma. in this connection Sankardeva explained in his Kirtan ghosha "Satyayuge prathamata Braha adi deva jata Hari-nam karila guputa“ (in the Golden age, firstly Brahma and other Gods concealed Hari-name) As a result of it, there was a complete downfall in the society regarding religious views. Various sages (Munis) came foreward to propagate the religion. instead of universal appeal, there prevailed diversity. The same 'Veda' was explained differently only to fulfill one's own will and objectives. Many new scriptures were composed giving importance of worshipping demi-gods and goddesses. The attention of general public was drawn to perform religious ceremonies which were fruitless but too much troublesome and costly. In this way, the culture was degraded. Ultimately the whole of the society was badly affected.
